Damn skippy! From the PERRO Sessions in 1971, here is "Mountain Song"withDavid Crosby, Jerry Garcia, Grace Slick and Paul Kantner. There are four versions of "Mountain Song" that were recorded.
All versions are labeled as follows:
Mountain Song #1 (5:42) -- This is the one you can hear below
Coined South Africa's First Lady of Song, Miriam Makeba doesn't come from the mountains. However, her voice and being was as strong as them, and that's why she I'm labeling her as a Mountain Mama.
A singer and civil rights activist, Miriam campaigned against apartheid in South Africa and passed away in 2008. She performed with Paul Simon during his powerful Graceland Tour performance in Zimbabwe in 1986. I'll let Paul take it away:
The masterful Kate Bush's forthcoming album is called, "50 Words For Snow." The release date is set for November 21, 2011 but you can pre-order it here.
A woman after my own heart -- Kate Bush I love you even more now. What are your 50 words for snow? I'll give you a hint of one of mine...
The first recording of "Big Rock Candy Mountain" was in 1928 by Harry McClintock. Since his version reached #1 on the Hillbilly Hits chart in 1939 (yeah, I didn't think there was such a chart either, amazing right?) many others have taken it under their musical wings. Most notably, the song was featured in the Cohen Brothers film, "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou" in 2000.
Here's a sampling of the Lyrics:
In the Big Rock Candy Mountains,
There's a land that's fair and bright,
Where the handouts grow on bushes
And you sleep out every night.
Where the boxcars all are empty
And the sun shines every day
And the birds and the bees
And the cigarette trees
The lemonade springs
Where the bluebird sings
In the Big Rock Candy Mountains.
You can check out the rest of the lyrics here. Take a look at some versions of "Big Rock Candy Mountain" below and let me know which ones you prefer. The first, I believe, is actual footage of Harry McClintock singing the song.
